Washington Freedom: MLC's Capital Franchise and Cricket on the East Coast

Washington Freedom

Washington Freedom are one of the six founding franchises of Major League Cricket (MLC), representing the Washington DC and Maryland region. The franchise name 'Freedom' references the United States' capital and the nation's ideals. The Washington-Baltimore corridor has a significant South Asian population that forms the core of the team's cricket fanbase.

East Coast Cricket

The eastern seaboard of the United States has a long cricket history — cricket was popular in colonial America before baseball became the dominant bat-and-ball sport in the 19th century. The Washington DC area has active cricket clubs, particularly in suburban Maryland and Virginia where South Asian communities are concentrated. Washington Freedom aims to build on this existing cricket infrastructure.

MLC's Role in US Cricket Development

Major League Cricket franchises serve a dual purpose: bringing world-class cricket to the United States and developing domestic American cricket. MLC works closely with USA Cricket and invests in grassroots programmes to identify and develop American-born cricketers who might one day represent the USA in international competition.
