The Women's Premier League

The Women's Premier League (WPL) launched in March 2023 as India's first major women's T20 franchise competition. Five franchises, each owned by established IPL entities, compete in a round-robin and knockout format across Indian venues. The WPL is the world's most lucrative women's T20 competition and a landmark in the professionalisation of women's cricket.

Mumbai Indians (WPL)

Owned by the same entity as Mumbai Indians in the IPL, the WPL Mumbai Indians squad won the inaugural WPL title in 2023. Their squad featured Harmanpreet Kaur as captain, alongside international stars including Nat Sciver-Brunt, Hayley Matthews, and Yastika Bhatia. They retained their dominant identity from the MI brand.

Delhi Capitals (WPL)

Owned by JSW-GMR (Delhi Capitals' IPL owners), Delhi Capitals Women feature Australian stars Meg Lanning and Jess Jonassen alongside India internationals Shafali Verma and Marizanne Kapp. Their squad is noted for explosive top-order batting and variety in their bowling attack.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (WPL)

RCB Women are owned by United Spirits / Diageo — the same RCB brand known in men's cricket. Smriti Mandhana is their marquee signing and captain, joined by Sophie Devine, Ellyse Perry, and Richa Ghosh. RCB won the WPL title in 2024, with Smriti Mandhana leading the batting performance.

Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz (WPL)

Gujarat Giants (owned by Adani Sportsline) and UP Warriorz (owned by JSW Group) round out the five-team competition. Both franchises focus on developing domestic Indian talent alongside overseas stars, building depth in women's cricket beyond the established metro teams. Deepti Sharma captained UP Warriorz in the inaugural season.
