Yashasvi Jaiswal: India's Explosive Young Test Star
Yashasvi Jaiswal is one of cricket's most exciting young batters — an Indian left-handed opener who has made an explosive impact in Test cricket with his aggressive, attacking style.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, born December 28, 2001, is one of the most exciting young batting talents in world cricket — a left-handed Indian opener who has made a significant impact in both Test and T20 cricket since his international debut in 2023. His story is extraordinary: he grew up in extreme poverty in Mumbai, sleeping in a tent near Azad Maidan and selling pani puri to support himself as a young cricketer, before his talent was recognized and he was placed in a proper cricket academy. He plays for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.
The Origin Story
Jaiswal's background has become one of cricket's most celebrated origin stories. He moved from Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, to Mumbai at age 11 with nothing but ambition to become a cricketer. Unable to afford accommodation, he slept in a tent at Azad Maidan cricket ground and sold food to survive. A Dadar Union cricket club official spotted him and arranged for him to train properly. From there, his extraordinary talent rapidly propelled him through Mumbai's domestic cricket system, IPL trials, and into the Indian national team.
Test Debut and Impact
Jaiswal made his Test debut for India in 2023 against the West Indies and immediately showed he was not a player who needed time to settle in. His ability to attack quality fast bowling from ball one — unusual for a Test opening batter who normally needs to manage the new ball carefully — set him apart. Against England in the 2024 home series, he was consistently India's most aggressive and productive batter, scoring at a rate that Test batters rarely achieve while also posting large individual totals.
IPL — Rajasthan Royals
Jaiswal plays for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL — the franchise that has also been home to players like Ben Stokes and Sanju Samson. His IPL performances showed the attacking, high-strike-rate batting that earned him India recognition. In T20 cricket, his left-handedness, natural attacking instinct, and ability to hit powerfully through both sides of the wicket make him a natural opener.
