Pakistan's 10,000-Run Man

Younis Khan was born in Mardan, North West Frontier Province (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) on 29 November 1977. A right-handed batsman with an unorthodox but effective technique, Younis became the first Pakistani to score 10,000 Test runs. He totalled 10,099 runs across 118 Tests at an average of 52.05 — exceptional in any era, and the highest by any Pakistani batsman in history.

2009 ICC World Twenty20 Victory

Younis captained Pakistan to their first ICC World Twenty20 title in 2009 in England. Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka in the final at Lord's — their first major ICC knockout title. Younis's calm leadership through a tournament that began in controversy (the Lahore attack on the Sri Lankan team had taken place earlier that year) was widely praised. The victory was a significant moment for Pakistani cricket at a difficult time.

Technique and Adaptability

Younis was known for his ability to adapt — a classical technique that he adjusted depending on conditions. He scored Test centuries on every major Test-playing ground in the world, demonstrating adaptability few batsmen can match. His 313 against Sri Lanka in Karachi in 2009 is Pakistan's highest individual Test score. He was particularly effective at converting half-centuries to centuries, with a high 50-to-100 conversion rate.

Final Test and Retirement

Younis retired from international cricket in May 2017, having played his final Tests against the West Indies. He went on to become Pakistan's batting coach under head coach Mickey Arthur and later served as batting coach in various capacities. His record-breaking career was a model of consistency and professionalism, and his statue stands at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.
