Yuvraj Singh's Six Sixes: The Over That Redefined T20 Hitting

On 19 September 2007 at Kingsmead, Durban, Yuvraj Singh hit six consecutive sixes off Stuart Broad's over during the 2007 T20 World Cup. The feat — only the second time six sixes in an over had been achieved in any form of professional cricket — lasted just 13 minutes and rewrote expectations of what was possible in T20 batting.

The Context

Yuvraj had just been involved in a heated exchange with England's Andrew Flintoff, who had sledged him in the previous over. Fired up, Yuvraj told Flintoff he would hit the next over for six sixes. Broad was bowling the 19th over of the innings. Ball by ball, Yuvraj made good on his promise.

The Six Balls

Each delivery was hit out of the ground: over long-on, over the boundary at square leg, over long-off, over extra cover, over long-on again, and the sixth over the ropes at midwicket. Broad varied his lengths and angles but nothing could stop Yuvraj. The 36-run over sent the stands into delirium.

Impact

The over became the defining visual moment of the 2007 T20 World Cup and symbolised the new era of aggressive batting that T20 cricket had unleashed. Yuvraj finished the tournament as Player of the Series with 362 runs and 15 wickets, winning the Player of the Tournament award.
