What Happened

Bancroft was filmed rubbing the ball with the tape. When confronted by umpires, he attempted to hide the tape by stuffing it down his trousers. The incident was clearly visible on camera. At the end of play, Bancroft and captain Steve Smith gave press conferences admitting that the ball had been tampered with and that it had been premeditated — the 'leadership group' had planned it during the lunch interval.

The Consequences

Cricket Australia conducted an investigation and issued bans: Steve Smith (12 months, all cricket), David Warner (12 months, all cricket, prohibited from future leadership roles), and Cameron Bancroft (9 months). All three received their bans not merely for the ball-tampering but for the premeditation and cover-up. The public and media reaction in Australia was devastatingly harsh — Smith and Warner were publicly booed on their returns home.

Aftermath and Comeback
