Cricket in Canada — North America's Original Cricket Nation

Canada holds a special place in cricket history: the 1844 USA vs Canada match in New York City was the very first international cricket fixture ever played — predating the first Test match between England and Australia in 1877 by 33 years. Canada is therefore, by the strictest definition, one of cricket's founding international nations.

Colonial Origins and Early Prominence

Cricket was brought to Canada by British soldiers and settlers in the 18th century. By the mid-19th century, cricket was the most popular sport in Canada, played extensively in Ontario and Quebec. Matches against English touring sides drew large crowds. However, ice hockey's rise in the late 19th century gradually displaced cricket as Canada's defining national sport.

ICC Membership and World Cup Cricket

Canada has been an ICC Associate Member since 1968. They qualified for the 1979 Cricket World Cup — their first — when no qualifier tournament was needed, and appeared again at the 2003 and 2007 editions. The 2007 World Cup was Canada's most recent appearance at the ODI World Cup.

Modern Revival and Global T20 Canada

The ICC launched the Global T20 Canada competition in 2018 as a franchise T20 league to boost cricket's profile in Canada. South Asian immigrants — particularly from India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka — sustain cricket's fan base in cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary. The South Asian diaspora represents Canada's most engaged cricket audience.

Challenges

Canada Cricket faces challenges similar to USA Cricket: mainstream sports (ice hockey, Canadian football, basketball) dominate; cricket is not in school curricula; and player development pipelines are limited. However, the large South Asian diaspora provides a foundation for growth, and proximity to the USA (and the MLC model) may help develop North American cricket together.
