Weight and Its Effect on Batting
Bat weight is not governed by the Laws of Cricket — there is no minimum or maximum, only dimensional limits. Most senior bats weigh between 2 lb 8 oz and 3 lb (approximately 1.1–1.36 kg). Lighter bats (under 2 lb 10 oz) allow faster bat speed and are preferred by T20 players who target the top edge; heavier bats (above 2 lb 12 oz) provide more power behind straight drives and can hit the ball further but require greater strength to generate swing speed.
The 2017 Bat Size Regulations
Before 2017, there were no restrictions on bat depth or edge thickness. The rise of modern bat manufacturing had produced blades with edges over 3 cm and blade depths exceeding 7 cm — significantly more power than traditional bats. The ICC introduced maximum edge thickness (1.56 inches) and blade depth (2.64 inches) regulations in 2017 to limit the power advantage of the thickest bats. Bat monitoring gauges are now available at all international matches.
What Bats Are Made Of
All cricket bat blades must be made from wood under the Laws. English willow is the premium material — it is lighter and more fibrous than Kashmir willow, giving better shock absorption and a larger sweet spot. The handle is typically made from cane bound with rubber strips to dampen vibration. Only the blade face may be treated with materials that protect it from drying; the back must remain untreated.
