How a Cricket Bat Is Made: Willow and Craft

A cricket bat is one of sport's most recognisable pieces of equipment, and its construction is a centuries-old craft that balances natural materials, traditional methods, and precise specifications. The best professional bats are made from Grade 1 English willow — the finest and most expensive material — by skilled craftsmen whose families have produced bats for generations.

The Wood: English Willow vs Kashmir Willow

English willow (Salix alba caerulea) is the wood of choice for professional and high-quality bats. It is lightweight yet strong, with a fibrous grain structure that cushions the impact of the ball and transfers energy efficiently to driving shots. Kashmir willow is harder and heavier, producing bats more commonly used by beginners. A Grade 1 English willow blank — before it is shaped — costs significantly more than lower grades.

Manufacturing Process

• Willow trees are felled after around 15 years of growth and cut into 'clefts' — the raw bat shape
• Clefts are dried for 6-8 weeks to reduce moisture content
• The blade is shaped on a lathe, then hand-finished with a drawknife
• The handle — made from cane bound with rubber — is attached using an adhesive
• The bat face is pressed repeatedly with a wooden roller to compress the fibres and improve performance
• A protective coating is applied to prevent moisture absorption

Size and Weight Regulations

The Laws of Cricket specify that a bat cannot exceed 38 inches (96.5 cm) in length and 4.25 inches (10.8 cm) in width. The blade can be no deeper than 2.64 inches (6.7 cm) at its thickest point. There is no regulation on bat weight, but professional players typically use bats between 2 lb 7 oz and 3 lb (1.1-1.4 kg). Heavier bats provide more power; lighter bats offer greater swing speed.
