Spin bowling presents a different challenge from pace bowling: the delivery is slower (the batsman has more time to see it), but the ball turns after pitching (producing lateral movement the batsman must account for). The batsman cannot predict with certainty how much the ball will turn — the surface, the bowler's variation, and the flight of the delivery all affect the final amount of deviation. The primary defensive risk against spin is not being bowled out from pace but being deceived by flight and bounce — the ball loops high, dips sharply, pitches shorter than expected, and hits the edge of the bat as the batsman plays too early or too late.

Two fundamentally different approaches exist for batting against spin: playing from the crease (allowing the ball to turn and playing after the turn) and using the feet (advancing down the wicket to meet the ball before it turns, converting a full delivery into a half-volley for driving). Using the Feet: The Advance

Advancing down the wicket against a spinner means moving the front foot significantly forward before the ball arrives — typically 1-3 metres toward the bowler — to meet the ball at or near the pitch of a delivery. This converts the ball from a potential turner (if played from the crease) to a half-volley or full-pitch ball that can be driven cleanly. The advance removes the turn from the equation — a ball that has not yet bounced cannot turn. The risk is timing: if the batsman advances and the ball is slower than expected (a looped delivery or a variation), they arrive at the crease with the ball still in the air and must either hit it as a full-toss or stumble back. The wicket-keeper will stump them if they miss.

The decision to advance must typically be made before the ball leaves the bowler's hand — there is not enough time to read the flight and then advance. Elite batsmen read the bowler's flight from the loop and trajectory in the first 10-15 metres after release and begin their advance based on this early information. Playing from the Crease

Playing from the crease against spin means staying in the batting stance and playing the ball after it has bounced and turned (or not turned). The technical keys: (1) bat and pad close together to minimise the gap through which a turning ball can pass; (2) playing with 'soft hands' on defensive shots so the ball drops near the feet rather than carrying to close fielders; (3) watching the ball off the pitch (the point of bounce) to read the amount of turn before committing to a shot; (4) using the feet minimally — back foot as a pivot rather than a platform for attacking shots. Playing from the crease is more conservative but more sustainable over long innings on turning pitches.

Under LBW Law 36, a delivery that pitches outside leg stump cannot be LBW — so a batsman who pads deliveries pitching outside leg without playing a shot cannot be given out (LBW only). Against an off-spinner bowling over the wicket to a right-handed batsman, the ball pitches well outside off-stump — so the batsman can pad it away without LBW risk. Padding becomes risky when the ball pitches on or around off-stump and hits the pads in line — that is a legitimate LBW appeal.
