The backlift is the upward movement of the bat as the bowler runs in to bowl — the batsman raises the bat during the bowler's delivery stride so that it is in a lifted, ready position by the time the ball is delivered. The backlift is not a preparation for a specific shot; it is the universal preparatory action that primes the bat to come forward (for a drive), downward (for a defensive shot), or across (for a pull or cut). Without a backlift, the bat starts from the ground position and must travel the full distance to the ball's contact point from rest — this reduces power, timing, and the ability to play any attacking shot effectively. The backlift is therefore a prerequisite for virtually all attacking batting, not one stylistic choice among many.

Straight vs Angled Backlifts

Coaching orthodoxy teaches a 'straight' backlift — the bat travels back toward second slip (slightly to the off-side), remaining vertically aligned so that its downswing toward the ball is along a straight path. A straight backlift minimises the chance of the bat coming 'across' the ball (cutting across the line rather than hitting through it), which is a common cause of edges. Backlift and Shot Power
