Big Bash League Format Explained: How Australia's T20 League Works

What Is the Big Bash League?

The Big Bash League (BBL) is Australia's flagship domestic T20 cricket competition, run by Cricket Australia. Founded in 2011 as a replacement for the old state-based Twenty20 Big Bash, the BBL features eight city-based franchises that compete from December through February — the Australian summer. The BBL is one of the world's most-watched domestic T20 leagues and has been influential in shaping modern T20 cricket in terms of entertainment format and innovation.

The Eight BBL Franchises

The eight BBL teams are: Melbourne Stars, Melbourne Renegades, Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Perth Scorchers, Brisbane Heat, Adelaide Strikers, and Hobart Hurricanes. Cities like Melbourne and Sydney have two teams each, creating local derbies that generate enormous local interest. Perth Scorchers have been the most successful side historically with multiple titles, while Sydney Sixers have also been perennial contenders.

BBL's Unique Rules

The BBL has introduced several format innovations not seen in other T20 leagues. The Power Surge allows the batting team to take a second powerplay (two fielders outside the circle) at any time between overs 11 and 16 — creating tactical flexibility. The X-Factor substitution allows teams to replace an unused batter or bowler at the end of the 10th over of either innings. The Bash Boost gives an additional competition point for the team leading at the halfway stage (10 overs) of each innings.

BBL and Women's Cricket

The Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) runs concurrently with the BBL and is the world's premier women's domestic T20 league. The WBBL regularly attracts the best women's cricketers from around the world and has been central to the rapid improvement of Australian and global women's cricket. Double-headers featuring a BBL and WBBL match at the same ground have attracted some of the largest women's cricket crowds in history.
