Setting the Bouncer Field: Why Fielding Positions Change for Short-Pitched Deliveries

The bouncer is designed to threaten the batsman physically and force them into defensive or attacking shots above chest height. Setting the correct field for a bouncer over uses different positions from the normal pace bowling field. This article explains how captains configure fields specifically for bouncer spells.

The Bouncer's Shot Pattern

A bouncer (short-pitched delivery that rises above chest/shoulder height) produces a specific set of batsman responses: the duck or sway (the batsman avoids the ball — no bat contact, no fielding opportunity, no run scored); the hook shot (the batsman plays the ball to the leg side, either attacking toward the square-leg boundary or pulling toward fine-leg); the fend or glove (the batsman is hit on the gloves or takes the ball on their bat handle, sending the ball skyward or behind toward the keeper and slip cordon); and the attempted cut over gully (the batsman tries to play the short ball over gully or third man on the off side). The bouncer field is specifically designed to position fielders where these specific responses are likely to go — not in the standard positions that protect against a good-length delivery's shot pattern.

The Leg-Side Trap Field

A classic bouncer-trap field is set to catch the hook shot: fine-leg (on the boundary behind the batsman on the leg side — positioned for the hook shot hit behind square leg); square leg (closer in, positioned for the pull shot going straighter toward midwicket); deep midwicket (boundary position for the hook shot hit in front of square leg); and backward square leg (positioned between square leg and fine-leg for the pull that goes slightly behind square). These positions together cover the arc of the hook shot from fine-leg to midwicket — any hook or pull shot within this arc finds a fielder. The slip cordon is typically retained (1-2 slips) for the glove or fend that sends the ball backward behind the batsman. This configuration removes mid-on, mid-off, and cover fielders — accepting that if the batsman plays a straight shot or doesn't play the ball, there are wide gaps available.

The Off-Side Trap and Gully Coverage

Some bouncer strategies target the off-side fend rather than the hook: deep gully (positioned behind point at boundary depth — for the ball that glances off the top edge going backward-square on the off side); third man (for the glanced ball going fine on the off side); and point (for the cut-type shot off the short ball that goes through point or wider). This off-side configuration accepts the hook shot going to the boundary on the leg side — the trade-off is protecting the off-side zone where edge-catches from the bouncer fend go. Experienced batting captains adapt their bouncer field between overs based on which response the specific batsman at the crease is most likely to produce.

Australia's bouncer trap for England 2013-14: In the 2013-14 Ashes, Australia's bowlers (Mitchell Johnson particularly) used an explicit bouncer strategy with a specific leg-side fielding trap against several England batsmen — fine leg, square leg, and deep midwicket were placed specifically for the hook shot that Johnson's extreme pace was forcing England batsmen into attempting. The field worked specifically for batsmen who couldn't resist the hook shot — those who declined (ducking or swaying away) rendered the field ineffective but those who attempted the hook found fielders in exactly the right positions.
