Bowling Strike Rate in Cricket Explained
Bowling strike rate measures how frequently a bowler takes wickets — dividing balls bowled by wickets taken. Here is how to read it and why it matters for bowler evaluation.
Bowling strike rate is a key wicket-taking metric: it measures how many balls a bowler delivers per wicket taken. The formula is straightforward — balls bowled divided by wickets taken. A strike rate of 20 means the bowler takes a wicket every 20 deliveries on average; a strike rate of 50 means every 50 deliveries. Unlike bowling average (which measures runs per wicket), strike rate measures frequency — how often a bowler strikes.

Bowling Strike Rate = Balls Bowled ÷ Wickets Taken. Example: a bowler who has taken 40 wickets in 900 balls (150 overs) has a strike rate of 900 ÷ 40 = 22.5. A lower number is better — fewer balls between each wicket.
What is a good bowling strike rate?
In Test cricket, elite strike rates are below 50 — meaning a wicket every 50 balls or fewer. Great match-winners like Dale Steyn, Joel Garner, and Malcolm Marshall had career strike rates in the 40s. Strike rates below 40 are exceptional. Strike rates above 65 suggest a defensive bowler who controls runs but does not take wickets at a high frequency. In ODIs, the comparison is different — a lower economy rate may be more valuable than a low strike rate.
Strike rate vs bowling average
A bowler can have a good average (low runs per wicket) but a poor strike rate (infrequent wickets), or vice versa. A bowler with average 22 and strike rate 45 is elite — cheap and frequent. A bowler with average 30 and strike rate 65 concedes more runs and takes fewer wickets — likely a containing bowler rather than a match-winner. The best metric for overall bowling quality combines both: average × strike rate as a composite.
