Where Is Cover Point?

Cover point stands on the off side of the pitch, between point and cover, approximately 30–40 metres from the bat in a mid-range fielding position. It is not on the boundary and not close in — it occupies the inner-ring area at roughly 45° ahead of square on the off side. The position is designed to cut off drives and deflections that bisect the gap between cover and point.

Why Cover Point Sees So Much Ball

The off side is the most heavily targeted zone in cricket. Right-handed batters drive, cut, and glide to the off side far more frequently than to leg, and the cover region is where the majority of those shots land. Cover point is in the optimal intercept zone for off-drives that are not quite full enough to reach cover cleanly and for cuts that fall short of point. A sharp cover point can turn a boundary into a single and generate two direct-hit run-out attempts per session.

Movement Patterns

• Start in a low athletic stance as the bowler delivers
• Read the batter's front foot and bat angle to anticipate direction
• Attack rolling balls rather than waiting — passive fielding gives the batter an extra half-second to complete a run
• For boundaries near cover point, dive only as a last resort and use a side-on slide rather than a full dive where possible

Cover Point in Different Formats

In Test cricket, cover point may be moved deeper on a flat pitch to save the cover drive boundary, becoming a 'deep cover' position. In T20 cricket, during power-plays cover point must be within the restriction ring, making the position more aggressive and closer to the bat. After the power-play, cover point can move to the ring or boundary depending on the batting threat.
