CPL 2026: Caribbean Premier League Teams, Format and Season Guide

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is one of cricket's most vibrant franchise competitions, played across the islands of the West Indies each August and September. The 2026 edition runs from 20 August to 25 September, featuring six franchise teams competing in a round-robin group stage followed by play-offs. The CPL is known for its party atmosphere, aggressive batting, and the involvement of some of the world's best T20 specialists.

The Six CPL Franchises

Tournament Format

Each of the six teams plays the other five twice in the group stage — ten matches per team. The top four teams advance to the play-offs, which include two Eliminator matches and a final. Matches are played across venues including the Brian Lara Cricket Academy (Trinidad), Providence Stadium (Guyana), Kensington Oval (Barbados), and Sabina Park (Jamaica).

What Makes CPL Unique

The CPL has a reputation for attracting global T20 stars alongside local Caribbean talent. It is one of the few major T20 leagues where West Indian players are a genuine majority in their home squads, giving it a regional identity that distinguishes it from leagues like the IPL. The crowd atmosphere — steel bands, flags, and carnival energy in the stands — is unlike anything else in cricket.

Historical Winners

Trinbago Knight Riders are the CPL's most successful franchise, having won the title four times. Guyana Amazon Warriors have contested multiple finals but were historically notable for losing their first five finals before finally claiming their first title. The Barbados Royals (formerly Barbados Tridents) and Jamaica Tallawahs are also former champions.
