Fast Bowling Technique — Run-Up, Action and Pace Generation

How fast bowlers generate pace, the correct bowling action, what the bound and delivery stride are, and why some bowlers are naturally quicker than others.

Bowling fast is one of cricket's most physically demanding skills. Generating 140+ km/h requires a coordinated sequence of movements that harness the entire body's kinetic chain — from the run-up through the coil, delivery stride, and follow-through. Great fast bowling technique maximises pace while minimising injury risk.

The Run-Up

The run-up builds momentum to be transferred into the delivery. Fast bowlers typically run between 10 and 30 paces. Too short a run-up reduces momentum; too long wastes energy. Bowlers have a 'bound' — a gathering jump just before the delivery stride — that converts linear momentum into rotational energy. Waqar Younis had a short, explosive run-up; Glenn McGrath had a long, rhythm-building approach.

The Delivery Stride

The delivery stride is the final step into the crease. The front foot lands behind the popping crease — overstepping is a no-ball. The front foot braces to stop the body's forward motion, allowing the energy to channel upward and through the arm. The non-bowling arm (left arm for a right-handed bowler) drives down at the point of delivery, adding pace and direction. The hips rotate fully through the ball at release.

Bowling Action

An action is legal if the elbow extends less than 15 degrees from its bent position between the upper arm horizontal and ball release (the ICC's throwing law, Law 21.1). Most genuine fast bowlers bowl side-on (chest faces square to the batter at the start of the delivery stride, rotating to face the batter at release) or front-on. Side-on actions tend to produce outswing and bounce; front-on actions (e.g. Waqar Younis) generate inswing and reverse swing.

Why Some Bowlers Are Naturally Faster

Anthropological factors: tall bowlers (Courtney Walsh, Joel Garner) gain extra bounce from height — the ball angles down steeply onto the batter. Levers: long arms increase the whip speed at the hand. Flexibility: hypermobile hips and wrists amplify the kinetic chain. Genetics: fast-twitch muscle dominance in the bowling arm and shoulder. Training can maximise natural pace but cannot override the body's physical limits — which is why genuinely fast bowlers (145+ km/h) are rare.
