What the 30-Yard Circle Is

The 30-yard circle (approximately 27.4 metres from the centre of the pitch) is an oval boundary marked on the field in limited-overs cricket. It defines the 'inner circle' — the zone where fielding restrictions apply. In ODI cricket, the ICC mandates that: during the first 10 overs (mandatory powerplay), only 2 fielders may be outside the circle; during overs 11-40, a maximum of 4 fielders may be outside the circle; during overs 41-50, a maximum of 5 fielders may be outside the circle. Fielders outside the circle in excess of these limits result in a no-ball being called. The restrictions were introduced in the 1990s and expanded to prevent fielding teams from placing all fielders on the boundary — which would prevent boundaries but allow unlimited singles.

In T20 International cricket: during the first 6 overs (mandatory powerplay), a maximum of 2 fielders may be outside the 30-yard circle; after the powerplay (overs 7-20), a maximum of 5 fielders may be outside the circle. With 11 fielders total, this means during the powerplay at least 9 fielders must be inside the circle — only the wicketkeeper and one boundary rider are allowed outside. This dramatically limits boundary saving: a team batting in the powerplay can score boundaries through any of the multiple uncovered boundary zones because only 2 fielders can protect them. This is why powerplay scores in T20 cricket are high (often 50-70 runs from 6 overs) — the fielding team cannot protect all boundary regions simultaneously.

Captains use the inner circle strategically: during the powerplay, they prioritise inside-the-circle catching positions (mid-off, mid-on, cover, square leg) because these are the positions most likely to take catches from mis-hit shots — the batsman is attacking but only 2 fielders can prevent boundaries, so the mis-hit is a genuine catching chance. After the powerplay, the captain's field-setting challenge is optimizing the mix of inside-circle (pressure-building) and outside-circle (boundary-protecting) fielders. A captain who places all 5 permitted outside-circle fielders on the boundary maximally protects against boundaries but removes pressure-building catchers from the inside zone. The balance between catching pressure and boundary protection defines the captain's defensive strategy in limited-overs cricket.

The fielding circle in Test cricket: Test cricket has no 30-yard fielding circle restriction — any number of fielders can be placed anywhere on the field at any time (except the Law restricting maximum 2 fielders behind square leg at the moment of delivery). This is why Test cricket's field settings look very different from limited-overs cricket: Test captains can place all 10 fielders in catching positions close to the bat if they choose, with no restriction on boundary exposure. Conversely, they can pack the boundary with 9 fielders to prevent scoring — an extreme defensive measure sometimes used when protecting a lead near the end of the final day.
