Cricket Ground and Pitch Dimensions Explained

The dimensions of a cricket ground — pitch length, boundary size, crease markings, and why pitch preparation matters for the result of a match.

Cricket is unusual among major sports in that there is no fixed boundary size. Grounds can differ dramatically in dimensions, which directly affects scoring rates, strategy, and match outcomes. The pitch itself, however, has strictly standardised dimensions under the Laws of Cricket.

The Pitch

  • Length: 22 yards (20.12 metres) from wicket to wicket.
  • Width: 10 feet (3.05 metres).
  • Creases: The popping crease is 4 feet in front of the stumps; the bowling crease runs through the base of the stumps; the return creases extend backward at right angles.
  • Surface: Prepared grass, rolled to varying hardness depending on the conditions desired.

The Stumps

Three wooden stumps are driven into the ground at each end, with two bails balanced on top. Each set of stumps is 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height and 9 inches (22.86 cm) wide — just wide enough for the ball to pass through. The bails sit in grooves on top of the stumps and fall off when struck by the ball or disturbed by the wicketkeeper.

The Boundary

There is no fixed boundary size in cricket — grounds range from small (under 60 metres from the pitch) to very large (over 80 metres). The MCG in Melbourne has one of the largest boundaries; some T20 franchise venues have small boundaries that favour six-hitting. The ICC specifies a minimum boundary of 59 metres for international matches, but allows significant variation beyond that.

The 30-Yard Circle

An oval ring drawn on the outfield approximately 30 yards (27.4 metres) from the centre of the pitch in all directions. This circle defines the fielding restriction zone in limited-overs cricket. Fielding restrictions require a minimum number of fielders inside this circle during powerplay overs.

Pitch Preparation

Groundstaff prepare the pitch in the days before a Test match to favour certain conditions. A green, grassy pitch encourages swing and seam movement — favoured by fast bowling teams. A dry, dusty pitch encourages spin — favoured when a team's best bowlers are spinners. Covering pitches from rain is standard at most venues; uncovered pitches (historically common in England) were far more unpredictable.

Why don't all cricket grounds have the same boundary size?

Cricket evolved on grounds of different shapes and sizes long before standardised dimensions were considered important. Historic venues like Lord's and The Oval have unusual shapes due to the surrounding land. The ICC sets minimum standards but has not mandated a single boundary distance, partly because retrofitting all grounds would be prohibitively expensive.

What is the 'square' on a cricket ground?

The square is the central prepared area of a cricket ground where all the pitches are located. A ground may have 10–15 parallel pitches on the square, rotated between matches to allow recovery. Only one pitch is used per match. The square is the most carefully maintained part of the ground.

How does boundary size affect scoring in T20?

Significantly. A boundary that is 60 metres rather than 75 metres means that shots requiring 15 metres less carry become sixes instead of fours. This inflates scores materially. Franchise T20 teams playing at home venues with small boundaries sometimes construct their squads specifically around the venue dimensions — prioritising power hitters for a small ground, line-and-length bowlers for a larger one.
