Four runs are awarded when the ball, having been hit by the batsman, crosses the boundary rope after contact with the ground (rolling or bouncing to the rope). Six runs are awarded when the ball crosses the boundary in the air without touching the ground inside the boundary — clearing the rope entirely through the air. The distinction requires: a four must touch the ground inside the boundary at some point before or during its crossing of the rope; a six must not touch the ground inside the boundary at any point during its trajectory from bat to clearing the rope. A ball that bounces once inside the field and then clears the rope is a four, not a six — the bounce before the rope contact defines it as a four.

If a fielder in the field stops the ball before it reaches the boundary, no boundary is scored — runs are only counted from the batsmen's running.
