Heath Streak: Zimbabwe's Greatest Fast Bowler

Heath Streak was the finest cricketer Zimbabwe produced in the pace-bowling department — a relentless right-arm fast-medium bowler who could swing the ball both ways and extract sharp movement off good length pitches. He was the engine of Zimbabwe's bowling attack through their best Test cricket years in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Test Record

Streak played 65 Tests for Zimbabwe, taking 216 wickets at 28.14 — both records for a Zimbabwean bowler. He also contributed usefully with the bat, averaging 22.75 in Tests, and was an important lower-order batter who could frustrate opposition attacks. His bowling record, achieved against international opposition with a team lacking the depth of major nations, is remarkable.

Captaincy and Controversy

Streak captained Zimbabwe and was one of the 15 senior players who retired in mass protest in 2004 over the Zimbabwe Cricket board's political interference and the dismissal of white players. This protest — known as the '15-player exodus' — severely weakened Zimbabwe cricket and signalled the end of their competitive era at Test level. Streak later served as batting coach for Bangladesh and various IPL franchises.

Legacy

Heath Streak's name is synonymous with Zimbabwe cricket's brief but genuine period as a competitive Test nation. With Andy Flower at one end and Streak at the other, Zimbabwe were capable of causing upsets against any side in the world through the late 1990s.
