Dale Steyn is widely regarded as the best fast bowler of the 21st century's first two decades. His Test average of 22.95 across 439 wickets is the lowest of any bowler with more than 200 wickets in Test history. He combined express pace (145+ kph), devastating swing, and relentless accuracy.

Why Steyn was so dominant

Steyn's action generated both outswing and reverse swing at genuinely fast pace. His round-arm action meant the ball came from an unusual angle. Combined with accurate length on a fuller length than most fast bowlers, he created 'nip-backers' that came back into right-handed batters late. He was exceptionally dangerous in home South African conditions — Newlands, Wanderers, Kingsmead — but equally effective overseas.

Injury and comeback

Steyn suffered a shoulder injury in 2016 that required surgery and kept him out for over a year. He returned to Test cricket in 2019 but was never quite the same force. He retired from Test cricket in 2019 at 36 but continued playing T20 franchise cricket globally into his late 30s.

South Africa's golden fast bowling era

Steyn was part of a generation of exceptional South African pace: Morne Morkel, Vernon Philander, and Kagiso Rabada succeeded and complemented him. Together they formed the most consistently threatening pace attack outside Australia and England in the 2010s. Steyn was the spearhead — and arguably the entire engine — of that group.
