The Three Technologies Behind DRS

The Decision Review System (DRS) relies on three core technologies to assist with on-field decisions: Hawk-Eye ball-tracking for trajectory, Hot Spot infrared imaging for edge detection, and UltraEdge/Snickometer for sound-spike analysis. Each serves a different purpose and checks a different aspect of the disputed delivery.

Hawk-Eye Ball Tracking

Hawk-Eye uses multiple high-speed cameras positioned around the ground to reconstruct the ball's exact path from the bowler's hand to the point of contact. A physics model then extrapolates where the ball would have gone had it not been interrupted by the batter's body — used primarily for LBW reviews to determine whether the ball was hitting the stumps.

Hot Spot Infrared Imaging

Hot Spot uses two infrared cameras positioned at either end of the ground. When the ball makes contact with the bat, friction generates heat — visible to infrared cameras as a bright spot. Hot Spot is used to determine whether the ball hit the bat or pad in caught-behind or bat-pad appeals. However, the technology is not infallible — very faint edges can sometimes leave no detectable heat signature.

UltraEdge — The Snickometer

UltraEdge (the broadcast version of the original Snickometer) uses highly sensitive stump microphones to capture every sound made near the wicket. The audio signal is displayed as a waveform alongside a slow-motion video feed — if a spike in the waveform coincides exactly with the ball passing the bat's edge, it indicates contact. This is the most reliable tool for detecting very faint nicks.

Reliability and Limitations

No single technology is perfect. Hot Spot misses some genuine edges; UltraEdge can produce spikes from environmental noise or pad contact; Hawk-Eye's margin of error is accounted for by the 'Umpire's Call' zone. Using all three technologies together — cross-referencing their evidence — gives DRS its overall high reliability.
