What Is the Impact Player Rule?

The Impact Player rule, introduced in the IPL from the 2023 season, allows each team to replace one of their four reserve players with one of the playing eleven at any point during the match — including mid-innings. The replaced player is no longer active in the match; the impact player takes their full playing role and can bat, bowl, and field without restriction.

How the Rule Works

• Each team nominates four reserve (impact) players before the toss, in addition to the eleven players
• At the start of an innings (either first or second) the captain can request an impact player
• The replaced player is removed from the match; the impact player takes their full role
• A team can use only one impact player per match
• The decision to use the impact player must be communicated to the umpires before the first ball of the relevant innings

Tactical Uses of the Impact Player

Teams most commonly use the impact player at the start of the second innings. If batting first, a captain might replace a mid-order bat with a specialist bowler for the chase (the original bowler having already bowled their overs while batting was the priority). If batting second, the captain might replace a weaker batter in the top order with a hitting specialist after assessing the target.

Controversy and Criticism

Critics argue the Impact Player rule devalues the all-rounder in T20 cricket. When a team can effectively carry extra specialists, the premium on a player who can both bat in the top five and take wickets in the death is reduced — a team can simply bring in a specialist bowler after the powerplay ends if they batted first. Supporters counter that it adds tactical complexity and creates more interesting strategic decisions before and during the game.
