Player Category Definitions

  • Capped Indian: an Indian player who has played at least one international match for India.
  • Uncapped Indian: an Indian player with no international caps — typically young domestic talent.
  • Overseas: any non-Indian player, regardless of how many international caps they hold.
  • Associate overseas: a player from an ICC Associate nation (not a full Test-playing nation).

Squad Size Rules

Each IPL franchise maintains a squad of 25 players per season. The squad must include a minimum number of Indian players and cannot exceed a maximum number of overseas players. In recent seasons, the squad has included up to eight overseas players within the 25-player cap.

Playing XI Overseas Limit

While a squad can contain eight overseas players, only four overseas players can appear in the Playing XI for any single match. This forces franchises to make hard choices — which four overseas players to field — and ensures that the competition remains dominated by Indian players in terms of total appearances.

Impact Player Rule

From the 2023 season, the BCCI introduced the Impact Player substitution rule — allowing teams to substitute one player during a match (before the 14th over of the first innings). The Impact Player can be an overseas player, but if used as an overseas substitute, it counts against the four-overseas limit in the playing XI.

The four-overseas-player limit is one of the most debated rules in franchise cricket. Critics argue it suppresses the number of top-quality overseas players available per game; supporters argue it protects Indian player development pathways.

Frequently asked questions

Can a player switch from uncapped to capped during an IPL season?

Yes — if an uncapped Indian player earns their first international cap mid-season, their status changes immediately. This can affect their auction value and retention costs for subsequent seasons.

How many overseas players can each team pick?

Teams may include up to eight overseas players in their 25-player squad, but only four can be named in the playing XI for each match.

What is an 'Impact Player' in the IPL?

The Impact Player rule allows teams to name four substitutes before a match and substitute one player before a set point in the innings. It's similar to a super-sub rule and increases tactical flexibility.
