Impact Player Rule in Cricket (IPL)

The Impact Player rule is an IPL-specific substitution rule introduced in 2023 that allows each team to bring on one additional player during the match. Unlike a concussion substitute, the Impact Player is a tactical choice — teams use it to strengthen their lineup based on match conditions.

How the Impact Player Rule Works

1. Each team names four substitute players on the team sheet before the match.
2. At the end of any over, a team may bring on one of the four substitutes as their 'Impact Player'.
3. The Impact Player replaces one of the original eleven — the replaced player takes no further part.
4. The Impact Player can bat (if the team is still batting) and bowl their full allocation.
5. Only one Impact Player substitution is allowed per innings per team.

Tactical Uses

• Bring in an extra pace bowler if the pitch is seaming more than expected.
• Add a specialist finisher-batter if the top order is out cheaply.
• Replace an injured player with a fit substitute seamlessly.
• Use a bowling all-rounder when chasing a big total — bat with the striker but use their bowling when defending.

Criticism of the Rule

Critics argue the Impact Player rule reduces the penalty for tactical mistakes and makes the game less predictable. Others note it has increased scoring rates further — making T20 cricket even more bat-friendly. The ICC has not adopted it for international cricket.
