What Is the IPL Salary Cap?

The IPL salary cap (called the 'purse') is the maximum total amount each franchise can spend on players in a given season. The BCCI sets the purse limit before each auction cycle. All retained players' deduction costs plus all auction purchases must remain within this total. Franchises that exceed the cap face penalties including fines and squad restrictions.

How the Purse Is Structured

The total purse is announced by the BCCI before the mega auction or mini-auction. Each franchise starts with the same total purse amount. Pre-auction retentions reduce this purse by the fixed deduction amounts. The remaining purse is what franchises bid with in the auction room. For example: if the purse is ₹90 crore and retentions cost ₹35 crore, the franchise enters the auction with ₹55 crore to spend on new signings.

Uncapped vs Capped Player Rules

A player is 'capped' if they have represented their country in at least one international match. An 'uncapped' player has not yet played international cricket. The IPL retains rules that incentivise signing young uncapped Indian talent — uncapped players cost less against the purse, and retaining uncapped Indian players costs significantly less than retaining international stars.

Franchises sometimes deliberately leave purse unspent in early rounds to remain competitive in later rounds when premium players attract higher bids. Auction strategy is as important as budget.

Frequently asked questions

Can an IPL franchise trade excess purse to another team?

No — purse cannot be transferred between franchises. However, players can be traded; in player trades, purse adjustments are applied based on the players' contracted values.

What happens if a franchise doesn't spend its full purse?

Unspent purse does not carry forward to the next season. Franchises aim to use their budget efficiently, but leftover purse is not penalised — it simply expires.

Do overseas players cost more against the salary cap?

Overseas players and domestic Indian players count equally against the salary cap in terms of auction price. However, overseas player slots are limited to four per playing XI, creating scarcity that often pushes their prices higher.
