How the LBW Law Evolved Over 200 Years

Cricket Without LBW

Early cricket (before 1774) had no LBW law. Batsmen were only out bowled (hitting the wicket) or caught. This created an obvious exploitation: batsmen would simply put their leg in front of the stumps to prevent being bowled, using the leg as an additional defence. The exploitation became widespread enough that the Laws of Cricket codified the first LBW law in 1774: if a batsman was hit on the leg by a straight-pitched ball that would have hit the stumps, they could be given out. This first LBW law was simple — 'straight pitch' meant the ball pitched in line with the stumps.

The 19th and early 20th century LBW law was interpreted very conservatively — umpires were reluctant to give LBW decisions because the outcome was difficult to judge visually (no ball-tracking technology existed). Batsmen exploited this conservatism: the leg before wicket law was rarely enforced for balls that pitched outside off stump (because the umpire could not be confident the ball would have hit the stumps). This created an incentive to pad up against off-stump deliveries, reducing the off-spinner's effectiveness dramatically.

The 1937 Reform

In 1937, the MCC reformed the LBW law to include balls pitching outside off stump — if a ball pitched outside off stump but would have hit the stumps, a batsman who played no shot could now be given out LBW. The rationale: batsmen were deliberately using their pads to smother off-spin bowling that pitched outside off stump, producing negative batting that reduced the off-spinner's effectiveness to near-zero. The 1937 reform restored the threat of LBW for off-spin bowling and is credited with the revival of off-spin as a wicket-taking discipline.

The 1937 reform introduced the concept of 'playing a shot' as a variable in LBW decisions — a batsman who offers a shot cannot be given out LBW if the ball pitches outside off stump (they attempted a shot, their failure to connect is not deliberate obstruction). Only a batsman who makes no attempt to play the ball (deliberate use of pads) is out LBW to a ball pitching outside off stump. This distinction between offering a shot and not offering a shot is central to modern LBW jurisprudence.

The Inline Restriction (1972)

In 1972, the MCC added the 'inline' restriction: a batsman cannot be given out LBW if the ball pitches outside leg stump. The rationale: allowing LBW for balls pitching outside leg stump would make leg-side bowling (bowling into the body and outside leg stump) unreasonably effective — bowlers could target the leg side systematically and have batsmen given out LBW. The outside-leg-stump protection means a bowler must bowl straighter (in line with the stumps or outside off stump) to have a viable LBW appeal.

The impact on leg-spin: the outside-leg-stump protection significantly reduces the effectiveness of one particular leg-spin dismissal — the googly that angles into a right-handed batsman from outside leg stump. If this delivery strikes the pad, no LBW is given because the ball pitched outside leg stump. This is why leg-spinners who rely heavily on the googly (the delivery that goes the 'other way') must produce LBW decisions through other deliveries (the straight one, the top-spinner) and rely on stumping and catch opportunities from the googly.

DRS and the Precision Era

The Decision Review System (DRS) introduced Hawk-Eye ball-tracking technology that for the first time allowed empirical assessment of whether a ball pitched in line, impacted in line, and would have hit the stumps. This transformed LBW decision-making from umpire estimation to data-verified analysis. The DRS confirmed that umpires' initial LBW decisions were correct approximately 75-80% of the time — meaning 20-25% of LBW decisions were wrong before DRS. The technology shifted the burden of proof: umpires now make their best judgment, and players can challenge via DRS if they believe the umpire was incorrect.

The DRS also introduced the 'umpire's call' concept: if the ball-tracking shows the ball clipping the edge of the stumps (less than 50% of the ball hitting the stumps), the umpire's original decision stands — a given-out remains out, a not-out remains not-out. This 'benefit of the doubt' zone reflects the technological precision limitation — a marginal decision is treated as uncertain, and the umpire's original judgment is preserved rather than overridden on inconclusive evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Can a batsman be out LBW to a delivery that bounces over the stumps?

No — if the ball impacts the pad at a height where ball-tracking shows the ball would have passed over the top of the stumps (above bails height), the batsman cannot be given out LBW. This is the 'would have gone over the stumps' exclusion. DRS's Hawk-Eye analysis specifically checks whether the projected ball trajectory at the stump-line is below the top of the stumps. A delivery that bounces sharply and hits the pad at shoulder height will always be not out LBW — the ball would have passed well over the stumps.

Why are LBW decisions still so controversial if we have ball-tracking?
