Brian Lara: The Prince of Trinidad and Holder of Cricket's Greatest Records

Brian Lara is the only batsman in history to score 400 runs in a single Test innings. His 400 not out against England in Antigua in 2004 remains the highest individual score in Test cricket. He previously held the record with 375 against England in Barbados in 1994 — a record he shared only briefly with Matthew Hayden (380 in 2003, broken by Lara's 400). No other batsman has come within 20 runs of his record.

Batting Style

Lara was a left-handed batsman with a notably high backlift — raising the bat almost to shoulder height before descending — generating remarkable power through the arc of the stroke. His cover drive was considered the most beautiful in cricket. He could play equally effectively on front foot and back foot, driving pacemen and sweeping spinners with equal authority. Steve Waugh described batting against Lara as 'like watching someone from another planet play cricket.'

Career and Legacy

Lara played 131 Tests for West Indies, scoring 11,953 runs at 52.88, including 34 centuries. He captained West Indies through one of their most difficult periods — declining performances, administrative chaos, and the end of the golden era. Despite these challenges, his personal statistical output remained extraordinary. He also played 299 ODIs, scoring 10,405 runs. Since retirement, he has become an ICC ambassador and remains one of cricket's most respected ambassadors.

Lara vs. Tendulkar

The greatest batting debate of the 1990s-2000s was Lara vs. Tendulkar — the two finest batsmen of the modern era. Tendulkar scored more runs (15,921 Tests + ODIs combined); Lara scored runs of more spectacular individual impact and held the Test record. Tendulkar played in stronger team contexts; Lara often carried West Indies alone. Cricket fans are divided — but both are universally acknowledged as two of the five greatest batsmen in cricket history.
