Major League Cricket (MLC) is the United States' first professional franchise T20 cricket league, launched in July 2023. It features six teams: MI New York (Mumbai Indians), Seattle Orcas, Texas Super Kings (Chennai Super Kings), Washington Freedom, San Francisco Unicorns, and Los Angeles Knight Riders (KKR). Like SA20, MLC has comprehensive IPL ownership: Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings own teams directly; KKR owns Los Angeles Knight Riders. The first season played at Texas's Grand Prairie Stadium — a 7,500-seat purpose-built cricket stadium, the first new professional cricket stadium built in the USA in decades.

Why the US Market Matters

The USA's South Asian diaspora — estimated at 4–5 million people with Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, or Bangladeshi heritage — represents the world's largest cricket-affinity population outside South Asia. This diaspora has high disposable income (Indian-Americans are one of the highest-income demographic groups in the USA) and strong cricket cultural identity. MLC's primary commercial target is this diaspora audience — broadcast rights to MLC matches are primarily valuable through Indian-American, Pakistani-American, and South Asian-American viewership. The secondary target is broader US sports audiences: the 2024 T20 World Cup's success in New York demonstrated that cricket can attract mainstream US sports interest.

First Season Highlights

MLC's inaugural July 2023 season was considered a commercial and competitive success beyond expectations: attendance at Grand Prairie Stadium was 80–90% capacity (approximately 6,000–6,500 per match), broadcast on Willow TV and ESPN+, and the quality of cricket (reinforced by IPL franchise infrastructure) was higher than critics expected. MI New York won the inaugural MLC title. The season's biggest achievement was demonstrating that professional cricket infrastructure could be built in the USA within a two-year development window — from concept to a functioning 6-team league with international-quality broadcast.

MLC's Challenges

MLC faces specific challenges not shared by established franchise leagues: (1) Player availability — US Domestic players are limited; MLC must import most of its talent with work visa limitations. (2) ICC scheduling windows — international players prioritise national tours over MLC in July windows. (3) Competing US sports — July is peak MLB (baseball) season; NFL preseason begins in August; MLS soccer runs concurrently. MLC competes for sports media attention in a deeply saturated American sports calendar. (4) Ground infrastructure — purpose-built cricket grounds are expensive; temporary pitches at American stadiums are lower quality. Long-term success requires permanent stadium investment across multiple US cities.
