PCA Stadium Mohali: Cricket on India's Pakistan Border

The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali — commonly called simply Mohali or the PCA Stadium — is a modern international cricket ground in the planned city of Chandigarh and its satellite town Mohali (SAS Nagar), near the border with Pakistan. Located approximately 250 km from the Pakistan city of Lahore, Mohali has hosted some of Indian cricket's most emotionally charged matches, including the famous 2011 World Cup semi-final.

History

The PCA Stadium was built in the 1990s as a modern alternative to the older venues in northern India. It hosted its first Test match in 1994, when India played the West Indies. The Punjab Cricket Association invested significantly in the ground's development through the 2000s, adding stands and improving facilities until Mohali earned a reputation as one of India's better-equipped venues. The ground is named after Inderjit Singh Bindra, a former BCCI president.

The 2011 World Cup Semi-Final

The most famous match in Mohali's history was the ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final on 30 March 2011 — India vs Pakistan. Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani attended as a guest of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a landmark moment of cricketing diplomacy. Around 35,000 fans packed the stadium, while an estimated 500 million people watched on television across the subcontinent. Sachin Tendulkar top-scored with 85 as India made 260/9. Pakistan fell short for 231. India went on to win the World Cup final five days later.

Date: 30 March 2011. Venue: PCA Stadium, Mohali. India 260/9 (50 overs) — Tendulkar 85. Pakistan 231 all out (49.5 overs). India won by 29 runs. Yuvraj Singh held India's chase together with the ball. The match was watched by the two prime ministers from the same VIP box. The ground erupted when Pakistan's last wicket fell.

Swing Bowling Conditions

Mohali's proximity to the Shivalik Hills means the ground often receives morning dew and can generate swing conditions particularly in the early overs of each day's play. The Dukes ball (used in Tests) swings more readily at Mohali than at most other Indian venues. Pace bowlers with good control of swing — Zaheer Khan was famously effective here — can cause havoc in the first 20 overs of a day.

Pakistan Border Atmosphere

When India plays Pakistan at Mohali, the geographical proximity to the border amplifies the intensity. Mohali and Chandigarh have large Punjabi populations whose families have historical connections across the partition boundary — the match becomes not just a cricket contest but a cultural flashpoint. Security for India-Pakistan matches at Mohali is extensive, with the approach roads to the stadium typically sealed hours before play.

Punjab Kings and IPL

Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab) play IPL home matches primarily at the PCA Stadium Mohali, with secondary fixtures occasionally at Dharamsala. The franchise has historically struggled in the IPL despite featuring some of cricket's biggest stars at various points — Chris Gayle, Virender Sehwag, Glenn Maxwell, and David Miller among them. The Mohali crowd, knowledgeable about cricket, provides strong support regardless of results.

Stadium Design

The PCA Stadium holds approximately 26,000 spectators in permanent seating, expandable to around 35,000 with temporary stands for major international fixtures. The ground is well-enclosed, creating a contained sound environment. The media boxes are positioned high in the West Stand, offering panoramic views across the playing surface and beyond to the Shivalik foothills to the north.
