South Africa's First Major T20 League

The Mzansi Super League (MSL) was South Africa's domestic T20 competition, running from 2018 to 2021. Created to fill the gap left after South Africa had no major franchise T20 league for several years, the MSL featured six city-based franchises and attracted both local and international talent across three editions.

Structure and Franchises

The MSL featured six teams: Jozi Stars, Cape Town Blitz, Tshwane Spartans, Nelson Mandela Bay Giants, Durban Heat, and Paarl Rocks. The Cape Town Blitz won two of the three editions, while the competition helped identify T20 specialists who would go on to form the core of South Africa's white-ball sides.

Replaced by SA20

The Mzansi Super League was replaced by the SA20 in 2023 — a new franchise league with significantly more investment, including ownership stakes from several IPL franchises. The SA20's success rapidly elevated South African domestic T20 cricket to a new level, with higher player salaries, bigger overseas signings, and a more professional structure.

Legacy of the MSL

The MSL served as a proving ground for South African T20 talent at a time when the country had no competitive domestic T20 league. Players like Quinton de Kock, Kagiso Rabada, and others developed their T20 skills in MSL cricket before the SA20 era, and the competition's role in bridging the gap is important to understanding South African cricket's T20 development.
