SA20 Explained: South Africa's Premier T20 Franchise League

The SA20 is South Africa's premier T20 franchise competition, launched in January 2023 under Cricket South Africa's oversight. What makes it unique in world cricket is its ownership structure — all six franchises are owned by IPL teams, injecting massive investment, global talent networks, and proven franchise management into the competition from day one.

Format

The SA20 runs over approximately five weeks in January and February each year. Teams play a round-robin group stage where each side faces all others at least once, followed by semi-finals and a final. The competition's timing, during the South African summer, ensures excellent pitch and weather conditions.

Why SA20 Matters

The SA20 has revitalised South African domestic cricket by keeping the country's best players at home rather than chasing contracts in the IPL or Big Bash League. It has also significantly raised the global profile of South African players like Quinton de Kock, David Miller, and Kagiso Rabada, who attract major overseas bids each auction cycle.

Within its first two seasons, the SA20 was widely praised for match quality and broadcast production values.
