What Is Net Run Rate?
Net Run Rate (NRR) is a statistical measure used in limited-overs cricket tournaments to separate teams that are equal on points in the standings. It represents the difference between a team's average run rate when batting minus their average run rate when bowling (i.e. what the opposition scored). A positive NRR means the team has outscored its opponents overall.
The Formula
NRR = (Total Runs Scored ÷ Total Overs Faced) − (Total Runs Conceded ÷ Total Overs Bowled). For example, if a team scored 1,800 runs in 300 overs (rate of 6.00) and conceded 1,600 runs in 300 overs (rate of 5.33), their NRR is +0.67.
How Dismissed Innings Are Treated
When a team is all out, the full allocation of overs is used (not the overs actually faced) in the NRR calculation for the fielding team — but for the batting team's rate, only overs actually bowled are counted. This means winning quickly (bowling the opposition out early) benefits NRR significantly.

NRR has decided World Cup group stage outcomes on multiple occasions. In the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, England's group stage qualification and New Zealand's semi-final place were affected by NRR.
