The outfield is the grassed area surrounding the pitch and inner ring, extending from the 30-metre fielding restriction circle to the boundary rope. While the pitch receives the most attention in ground preparation, the outfield directly affects the pace at which the ball reaches the boundary, how much moisture is available to influence swing, and the difficulty of ground fielding.
How Outfield Speed Is Measured
The ICC rates outfield quality and encourages venues to maintain 'outfield speed' standards. A fast outfield means the grass is short, dry, and closely mown — the ball skims quickly to the boundary. A slow outfield means the grass is long, damp, or soft — the ball decelerates and boundaries require more power. Batters at venues with genuinely fast outfields score more boundaries from the same quality of shot.

The outfield affects ball condition. A rough, dry outfield scuffs one side of the ball more rapidly, helping reverse swing set in sooner.
