Pakistan Cricket History: Independence, Golden Generations, and the PCB's Story

Cricket Before Partition

Cricket had a long history on the Indian subcontinent before the 1947 partition that created Pakistan and India as separate nations. Pakistani players had represented united India in Test cricket — many of the Muslims who went on to become Pakistan's first Test cricketers had previously played as Indians. The newly created Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) joined the ICC in 1952 and played their first Test against India in 1952 — a momentous occasion given the political context.

Hanif Mohammad and the Early Years

Hanif Mohammad — 'the Little Master' — was Pakistan's first cricket hero. His 499 for Karachi against Bahawalpur in 1958 was the highest first-class score in history (later broken by Brian Lara). Hanif's 970-minute innings of 337 against the West Indies in 1958 saved the Test and was the longest innings in Test history. He set the standard for Pakistan batting craft.

Imran Khan and the 1992 World Cup

Pakistan cricket's greatest moment came in 1992 when Imran Khan's 'cornered tigers' won the World Cup. Three years earlier, Pakistan had won the inaugural World Test Championship under Javed Miandad. The combination of Imran's leadership, Wasim Akram's genius, and Pakistan's collective pride in their cricketing identity produced the most celebrated moment in the country's sporting history.

Governance Challenges

Pakistan cricket has been plagued by governance challenges — frequent PCB chairman changes (sometimes with government involvement), player selection controversies, and multiple corruption scandals. The 2009 Lahore attack — when gunmen attacked the Sri Lanka team bus — forced Pakistan to play all home cricket overseas for nearly a decade. Pakistan's 2021 return to hosting Test cricket, and the subsequent PSL playing in Pakistan, have been significant steps toward normalisation.
