The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is Pakistan's premier T20 franchise cricket tournament, first held in Dubai in 2016 and now played almost entirely in Pakistan. Six city-based franchises compete from February to March each year. The PSL is the most-watched cricket event in Pakistan and has significantly boosted Pakistan's domestic cricket infrastructure.
The Six Franchises
Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Quetta Gladiators, Peshawar Zalmi, Islamabad United, and Multan Sultans contest the PSL. Islamabad United have the most PSL titles (3: 2016, 2018, 2020). Lahore Qalandars won in 2022 and 2023 — their first titles after years of near-misses. Quetta Gladiators won in 2017 and 2019. Peshawar Zalmi won in 2017.
PSL Format
The PSL uses a similar format to other franchise T20 leagues: a round-robin league stage followed by playoffs. Each team plays 10 league games (home and away against the other five). The top four teams qualify for playoffs: two qualifier matches (with the top two getting a second chance) and an eliminator, leading to the PSL Final. Matches are split between Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Peshawar.
Overseas Players and Pakistan's Stars
The PSL drafts overseas players through a tiered category system — Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver — with more expensive categories giving teams first priority in the draft. Each team can include up to four overseas players in their playing XI. The PSL has been the launch pad for many Pakistan Test players: Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Hasnain, and Hasan Ali all developed significant IPL profiles from PSL performances.
