The Pakistan Super League was born from necessity. After the 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore, Pakistan was unable to host international cricket for nearly a decade. The PSL was established partly to maintain cricket infrastructure and global interest in Pakistani cricket during that difficult period.
Founding and Early Seasons
The PSL was founded in 2015 and began play in February 2016 with five franchises — Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad United, Peshawar Zalmi, and Quetta Gladiators — all playing in the UAE due to security concerns. Islamabad United won the inaugural title.
The Return to Pakistan
Moving matches back to Pakistan was a key milestone. The PSL gradually shifted games to Pakistani grounds: the PSL 3 final in 2018 was played in Lahore before a capacity crowd. By PSL 5 in 2020, the full tournament was held in Pakistan for the first time. The successful hosting signalled that international cricket could safely return to Pakistan — which it did, with the national team hosting bilateral series at home from 2019 onward.
Format
The PSL currently has six franchises — Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi, and Quetta Gladiators. The competition follows a round-robin group stage followed by playoffs and a final. Players are acquired through annual player drafts, categorised by Diamond, Gold, Silver, and Emerging player tiers.
Global Appeal and Player Development
The PSL attracts international stars including West Indian, English, Australian, and South African players during their off-season. More importantly, it has been a significant route for young Pakistani cricketers to gain franchise experience. Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam, and Shaheen Afridi all developed their profiles through PSL competition.
