Rain is cricket's great disruptor. In a sport where a 5-day Test can be decided by a single session and ODIs depend on every over, weather interruptions create complex situations requiring formal rules, mathematical calculations, and clear umpiring powers.

Umpire Powers in Rain

The on-field umpires have sole authority to take the players off for rain or bad light. They assess whether conditions are safe and fair for play — both rain intensity and outfield drainage affect decisions. Test Cricket and Rain

The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) Method

When rain interrupts a limited-overs match already in progress (or threatens to reduce overs), the DLS method calculates a revised target for the batting team. It uses a mathematical model based on the number of overs and wickets remaining — recognising that a team with 10 wickets and 30 overs is in a different position to a team with 5 wickets and 30 overs.

DLS replaced the older Average Run Rate method and the Rain Rule after the 1992 World Cup semi-final debacle, where South Africa's revised target became 22 from 1 ball — widely recognised as absurd.
