Reverse swing is one of the most potent weapons in fast bowling — a phenomenon where an old cricket ball swings in the opposite direction to conventional swing. When one side of the ball becomes very rough and the other side is kept smooth and shiny, aerodynamic forces cause the ball to swing towards the rough side rather than the smooth side. This confuses batters who expect the ball to swing conventionally, making reverse swing particularly devastating in the 40th–50th over of an ODI or after 40 overs in a Test.

The Science of Reverse Swing

In conventional swing, the shiny side experiences laminar (smooth) airflow and lower pressure, while the rough side experiences turbulent airflow. The ball swings toward the lower-pressure smooth side — away from the rough side. In reverse swing, the ball travels faster and air flow over both sides becomes turbulent — but the rough side becomes MORE turbulent, creating higher pressure on the rough side. The ball now swings toward the rough side, reversing the conventional direction.
