Seam bowling is the primary attacking method in Test and limited-overs cricket for pace and medium-pace bowlers — using the ball's raised seam (the stitched equator of the cricket ball) to produce movement through the air (swing) or off the pitch (seam). Each type of seam movement is produced by different grip, wrist position, and atmospheric conditions. Outswing vs Inswing: Moving the Ball Through the Air

Conventional swing is produced when the ball's seam is held upright and angled toward the intended swing direction, with one side of the ball shined (smooth) and the other allowed to roughen. The polished side creates a small aerodynamic difference in air pressure, causing the ball to curve through the air: (1) Outswing: the ball curves away from a right-handed batsman (from the batsman's body toward off-stump, then continuing outward). This creates lateral ball rotation which, when the ball pitches, causes it to move from off to leg (into a right-handed batsman). The off-cutter is particularly effective on dry or crumbling pitches (where the ball is more likely to grip and deviate); (2) Leg-cutter: the reverse — fingers cut from leg to off at release, causing the ball to move from leg to off (away from a right-handed batsman) after pitching. The leg-cutter produces the effect of an off-spinner's delivery but from a pace bowler's action; (3) When cutters are used: cutters are most effective with an older ball (30-40 overs in an ODI, 50+ overs in a Test) when the ball is not swinging conventionally. Wobble seam: the modern innovation. Wobble seam bowling (associated strongly with Jasprit Bumrah) involves releasing the ball with the seam in no specific oriented position — the seam wobbles or rotates irregularly as it travels through the air. Unlike conventional swing (which requires upright seam for maximum effect) or cutters (deliberate seam position), wobble seam allows the ball to deviate unpredictably in any direction. The ball may swing left, right, dip, or go straight — the batsman cannot read the seam position to anticipate the movement. Reverse Swing vs Conventional Swing

Conventional swing uses the new ball (0-40 overs, shiny on one side, seam upright). The ball's shine creates the aerodynamic asymmetry that produces swing. As the ball ages (60-80+ overs), it loses its shine on both sides — conventional swing ceases. Reverse swing then becomes available: (1) Mechanism: with an old ball (rough on both sides but with one side deliberately kept rougher through scuffing and moisture), the aerodynamic difference becomes reversed. The rough side now catches more air than the shiny side — causing the ball to swing in the opposite direction from conventional swing.
