What Is Drift?

Drift is the lateral movement of a spinning cricket ball through the air before it pitches. An off-spinner who imparts overspin and side spin can cause the ball to drift from leg to off in the air (towards the right-handed batter) before turning back the other way off the pitch. Drift is distinct from turn — turn happens after the ball pitches, drift happens before.

Why Does Drift Happen?

Drift is primarily an aerodynamic effect created by the Magnus effect. When a ball spins, air flows faster across one side than the other, creating differential pressure that pushes the ball laterally. A ball spinning clockwise (from the bowler's perspective) drifts towards the spinner's natural turning side. The effect is more pronounced at higher flight trajectories and in humid, heavy air.

How Bowlers Use Drift

Shane Warne's leg-spin was renowned for its drift — the ball would drift into the right-handed batter before turning sharply away from leg to off. This created a dual deception: the batter initially saw the ball drifting towards them (suggesting a line heading down leg), then the ball pitched and turned past the outside edge. The drift created an optical illusion that made the eventual turn even more pronounced.

Drift is primarily the domain of wrist-spin bowlers (leg-spin, googly) and sometimes finger-spin. Off-spinners who bowl with overspin can drift the ball away from a right-handed batter.
