Sunil Gavaskar: India's First Test Batting Great

Sunil Manohar Gavaskar, born in Mumbai in 1949, was the first batter in cricket history to score 10,000 Test runs. He played from 1971 to 1987, scoring 10,122 Test runs at an average of 51.12 with 34 centuries. Without a helmet — Gavaskar famously wore a white sun hat when others were adopting protective headgear — he faced the most feared pace attacks in history and scored with disciplined elegance.

Debut Series: India in West Indies, 1971

Gavaskar's debut series against West Indies in 1971 was one of the most remarkable in Test history. India had never won a series in West Indies. A 21-year-old Gavaskar scored 774 runs in the four-match series at an average of 154.8, including four centuries. India won the series 1-0. His performance was so dominant that it remains the highest aggregate by a debutant in a single Test series.

Facing the West Indies Pace Machine Without a Helmet

Through the 1970s-80s, West Indies fielded the most feared bowling attack in history: Roberts, Holding, Garner, Croft, and Marshall — all capable of 140+ kph on surfaces that gave uneven bounce. Gavaskar faced them without protective headgear, relying on technical correctness and footwork. His average against West Indies was above 65 — higher than against any other nation. He was hit multiple times on the body but never adopted helmet use until late career.

10,000 Test Runs

Gavaskar reached 10,000 Test runs during the 1987 World Cup year — the first batter to do so. At the time, the second-highest total was well under 9,000. His milestone became a landmark in batting records. Sachin Tendulkar later broke his century record; Australia's Ricky Ponting later broke his runs record. But Gavaskar was the first to show that a batter could sustain elite production for 16 years.
