What Is the Super Smash?

The Super Smash is New Zealand Cricket's (NZC) domestic T20 competition, featuring six provincial associations. It runs annually from December to February during the New Zealand summer and serves as both a talent development pathway for the Black Caps and a platform for international players between southern-hemisphere tours.

The Six Teams

  • Auckland Aces
  • Central Stags (Central Districts)
  • Canterbury Kings
  • Northern Knights (Northern Districts)
  • Otago Volts
  • Wellington Firebirds

Format

Teams play home and away fixtures in a round-robin group stage. The top four sides qualify for a semi-finals and final. The competition runs across approximately eight weeks during the New Zealand summer, overlapping with international tours to New Zealand. When Black Caps players are on national duty, provincial teams field younger or returning players.

Women's Super Smash

NZC also runs a Women's Super Smash competition in the same structure — six provincial sides, round-robin group stage, and a knockout final. The women's competition features White Ferns players and has been important in developing New Zealand's depth in women's T20 cricket, contributing to the team's World Cup competitiveness.

The Super Smash does not attract overseas T20 specialists at the level of the IPL or BBL — its focus is strongly on domestic New Zealand player development. This keeps it competitive but limits its international profile.
