Rain is cricket's most persistent enemy. A single shower can change the entire complexion of a match, erasing a team's advantage or suddenly making a comfortable chase impossible. The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method is the mathematical system the ICC uses to set fair revised targets when weather interrupts limited-overs matches.

History of the DLS Method

Before DLS, cricket used crude rain rules — the most infamous being 'highest scoring overs.' In the 1992 World Cup semi-final, South Africa famously needed 22 runs off 1 ball after rain reduced their target using that method. Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis devised a statistically rigorous replacement in 1997. Steve Stern updated the model in 2014, giving us the 'S' in DLS.

The Core Concept: Resources

DLS works on the idea that a batting team has two resources at any point: overs remaining and wickets in hand. These combine into a percentage figure called 'Resources Remaining.' A team starting an innings with 50 overs and 10 wickets has 100% resources. Rain that removes overs, or wickets that fall, reduce this percentage.

How a Revised Target Is Calculated

  1. Determine Team 1's score and resources used
  2. Calculate Team 2's remaining resources after the interruption
  3. If Team 2 has fewer resources than Team 1, apply DLS to set a proportional target
  4. If Team 2 has more resources (e.g. Team 1 was interrupted), Team 2's target is scaled up

Classic DLS Scenario

Team 1 scores 280 in 50 overs. Rain during Team 2's innings reduces their chase to 30 overs. Team 2 loses 40% of their resources compared to Team 1's full 50 overs. DLS calculates the revised target as approximately 224 (40% reduction from 280, factoring in par score tables). Team 2 needs 224 in 30 overs to win.

When Is DLS Applied?

  • Interruption during Team 1's innings (overs lost before team 1 finishes batting)
  • Interruption between innings (reducing Team 2's chase to fewer overs)
  • Interruption during Team 2's innings (revising the target mid-chase)
  • Multiple interruptions in the same match (DLS is recalculated each time)

Minimum Overs for a Result

For a match to be deemed a valid DLS result, Team 2 must face a minimum number of overs — typically 20 in ODIs and 5 in T20Is. If rain prevents even that, the match is abandoned without a result or declared a 'No Result.'

Par Score

During a Team 2 chase, officials calculate a 'par score' — the score Team 2 should be at any point during their innings to be on track under DLS. If rain stops play with Team 2 batting, the team above the par score at that moment wins.

In T20 tournaments, a rain-affected match can sometimes produce counterintuitive results. A team scoring quickly early can build a DLS par advantage that matters enormously if rain returns. Teams sometimes deliberately accelerate even when wickets fall, to build the par cushion.

Criticism of DLS

  • The model assumes average batting conditions — may not reflect a specific pitch or conditions
  • Teams with aggressive lower orders may have an advantage DLS doesn't fully capture
  • Very short chases (5–10 overs) produce heavily compressed targets that feel arbitrary
  • Public understanding is low — commentators often struggle to explain live calculations clearly

Frequently asked questions

What happens if it rains during Team 1's innings in an ODI?

The match is shortened for both sides. If Team 1 faces only 35 overs, Team 2 also faces 35 overs — but DLS adjusts Team 2's target based on the resources Team 1 used, not simply reducing proportionally.

Does DLS apply in Test cricket?

No. Tests do not use DLS. If overs are lost, the match simply has fewer overs available. If weather causes significant loss of time, the game may end in a draw.

Who calculates the DLS target during a match?

A match referee or official scorer uses the official DLS software. Umpires are notified and communicate the revised target to both teams.

Can a team win by DLS after the opposition hasn't bowled?

No. Both teams must face at least the minimum qualifying overs for DLS to produce a winner. If weather prevents the minimum, the result is No Result.
