Essex Cricket: 8 County Championships, Alastair Cook & Chelmsford

Essex County Cricket Club, based at the County Ground in Chelmsford, is one of English cricket's great modern success stories. After winning their first County Championship in 1979, Essex have gone on to claim eight titles and produce some of England's finest batsmen.

Championship Success

Essex's glory years began in the late 1970s under Keith Fletcher, winning titles in 1979, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1991, 1992, and then a resurgence in 2017 and 2019. The 2017 title came after years in Division Two, making it especially celebrated.

Alastair Cook: Essex and England's Finest

Alastair Cook is Essex's most celebrated player, scoring 12,472 Test runs for England — more than any other England batter. A left-handed opener known for his mental fortitude, Cook retired from international cricket in 2018 and from first-class cricket in 2023.

The Chelmsford Ground

The County Ground in Chelmsford is Essex's home. While not an England Test venue, it has a warm, intimate atmosphere and regularly produces excellent pitches for county cricket. It holds around 6,500 spectators.
