Phillip Joel Hughes was an Australian opening batter of considerable talent, whose international career was cut tragically short by an extraordinary and devastating accident in November 2014. The Accident

On 25 November 2014, during a Sheffield Shield match between South Australia and New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Hughes was struck on the back of the neck by a short-pitched delivery from Sean Abbott. The ball struck a gap in his helmet and caused a vertebral artery dissection. Hughes collapsed immediately and, after two days in a coma, passed away on 27 November 2014 — two days before his 26th birthday.

His Career

Hughes had played 26 Tests for Australia, scoring 1,535 runs at an average of 32.65, including three centuries. His bold technique and attacking left-handed batting made him an exciting prospect, though his Test career was punctuated by selection uncertainty and periods out of the team. He was in strong Sheffield Shield form and appeared set for an Ashes recall at the time of his death.

In the hours after Hughes died, a social media tribute went viral globally. Cricketers, fans, and well-wishers placed cricket bats on their doorsteps, against fences, or in their front gardens as a mark of respect — a movement that became known as 'Put your bats out.' The image of hundreds of cricket bats left outside homes around the world became one of the most emotional moments in cricket's modern history. His Test cap number — 408 — became a tribute symbol.
