SA20 — South Africa's T20 League Explained

SA20 is South Africa's premier T20 franchise cricket competition, launched in January 2023. A unique feature of SA20 is that all six franchises are owned by IPL team ownership groups — a deliberate strategic decision by Cricket South Africa (CSA) to attract investment and align the competition with the world's most valuable cricket brand. SA20 has quickly established itself as one of the top global T20 leagues.

Format

SA20 runs each January, overlapping with the Australian Big Bash League. Six teams play a round-robin group stage followed by knockout semifinals and a final. The competition takes place across South Africa's major cities including Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Paarl, and Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), making use of South Africa's excellent cricket infrastructure.
