Seam bowling is a fast-bowling technique where the bowler aims to land the ball on its raised seam — the stitched ridge that runs around the equator of a cricket ball — to generate unpredictable movement off the pitch. When the ball lands seam-first on a good length, it can deviate left or right, making it very difficult for a batter to judge.

What is the seam?
