The stadium was built in 2006 to replace the Bangladesh National Stadium as the country's main cricket ground. Named after Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq (known as Shere Bangla — 'Tiger of Bengal'), a prominent Bengali statesman, it became Bangladesh's home base.
